Open Space at the Rear Gate

Mount Burdell Open Space Preserve

Marin County’s largest open space preserve, roughly 1,627 acres rising to a 1,558-foot summit.

The property backs directly to the preserve, with a secured rear access point connecting the home to the Mt. Burdell open-space setting. From the summit, panoramic views sweep across Big Rock Ridge, Mount Tamalpais, San Francisco Bay and Mount Diablo.

The multi-use trail system welcomes hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians on routes like Deer Camp Fire Road, Old Quarry, Michako, Cobblestone Fire Road and the newer Eagle Rim Trail. The Bay Area Ridge Trail runs through the preserve, with the O’Hair Park to Olompali State Park section climbing about 4.2 miles one-way to the summit.

Just a short drive from the home at the base of Mt. Burdell, Stafford Lake County Park rounds out the outdoor lifestyle. Its scenic lake offers shore fishing for catfish, bluegill and bass, with picnic areas and barbecue facilities, the Terwilliger Nature Trail, a paved trail popular with walkers and cyclists, an 18-hole disc golf course and a bike park, all complementing the Mt. Burdell Open Space Preserve access right out the back door.

Getting Around

A Marin address with the City in reach

Novato sits about 28-30 miles north of San Francisco, with several ways to make the trip.

By Car · US-101

Highway 101 runs south through Marin to the Golden Gate Bridge. Off-peak, the drive to San Francisco is roughly 35-45 minutes; peak-hour traffic stretches it, so many locals time their trips against the flow.

By Train & Ferry · SMART

SMART rail connects Novato stations, including Novato San Marin, south to Larkspur, where the Golden Gate Ferry crosses to the San Francisco Ferry Building. It removes freeway uncertainty and is popular with hybrid commuters.

SMART Schedules

By Bus · Golden Gate Transit

Direct Golden Gate Transit routes run along the Highway 101 corridor from Novato to San Francisco, a one-seat alternative to driving.
